Our society instills in us the belief that everything should be done “my way”.
We drive down the road. If people do not drive as we think they should, we get irritated. If they drive too slowly, we pass them. We want to drive at the speed we desire.
We go to a restaurant or drive-through and order our meal just the way we want it. That includes the side dishes, beverages, and how the meat is cooked. We want it done “my way”.
We go on Amazon and order the items we want, color, size and design. They all must be just what we want.
I wonder. Do we approach God that way?
Do we step up to God and offer Him our prayer request like He is a genie positioned to answer our every request “my way?” What do we do it He does not answer the way we desire? Do we get angry? Do we decide to quit communicating with Him? Do we decide He doesn’t love us? Do we decide to end our relationship and do things,”my way?”
The people whom God approved and blessed didn’t respond that way when God didn’t answer in accordance with their will.
Abraham waited twenty-five years for his son Isaac to be born. Twenty-five years from the time God first gave him the promise of a son until Isaac was born! He could have turned his back on God, saying that God hadn’t kept His promise. But he didn’t. Even though he and his wife were well beyond child-bearing years, he “grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do as He had promised.” (Romans 4:20b-21). The result was that God honored him. His promised son was born. In fact, Jesus came through his lineage.
Joseph was treated terribly by his family. He was sold into slavery in a foreign land. There he was falsely charged with rape and put in prison. He sat there for two years with no earthly hope of being released. He had already been a slave for over eleven years. He had every reason to turn his back on God; to tell God He couldn’t be trusted, and He wasn’t all powerful. But he didn’t. Instead, he kept trusting God. God honored that trust. He made him second in command over Egypt. He restored his family to him. His family was saved from a famine and became the lineage through which Jesus would come.
These are just two examples. There are many more in the Bible. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8.) He is a promise keeping God. He promises to love us, provide for us, guide us, and be with us.
When things don’t go “my way,” what do we do? Do we throw a fit? Do we quit trusting God? Do we think God doesn’t love us? Do we go our own way?
If we wait for God, and do things His way, He will be with us, help us, and work things out for us in a way that reveals Himself, His wisdom, and His compassionate love and care.
